Welcome to Athens, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln Long Nine Museum Historic Site. Visit the historic building that Abraham Lincoln visited on many occasions in his travels between New Salem and Springfield.

The building was constructed by Colonel Matthew Rogers in 1831-1832 and still stands today as a tribute to Abraham Lincoln.

The Colonel Matthew Rogers Building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is also a member of the Looking For Lincoln Consortium.

Locating Athens

Athens is located just 7 miles east of New Salem State Historic Site on the Athens Blacktop. It is also located 12 miles north of Springfield on Illinois Route 29. To reach Athens, gateway to New Salem exit from Interstate 55, by taking the Williamsville Exit 109.
